Greenwich Country Club 1892

Located in the distinguished neighborhood of Greenwich, CT the Greenwich Country Club is the premier private country club of the northeast United States. Founded in 1892, as the Fairfield County Golf Club, the Greenwich Country Club is a first-class, family-oriented Private Club that offers a full range of amenities including our elite 18-hole golf course, driving range, racquets courts (tennis, squash and paddle), swimming pool and the area's finest dining and social facilities. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Julian W. Curtis (1858 - 1944), first President of the newly chartered organization, the club grew from a five-hole backyard endeavor to a code of peaceful knolls in excess of 165 acres.  From a charter membership numbering thirty two, the club has grown to 650 members and includes an international roster of members from as far away as Europe, South America and the Far East. Our private Clubhouse serves as a focal point of activity for our Members and exhibits the qualities of elegance and tradition that emphasize classic country club architecture.

The club was the fourth Country Club established in America.  In 1909, the name was changed to the Greenwich Country Club, reflecting the expansion of the club’s facilities to include a broader spectrum of activities and sports other than golf.  Concurrent to the name change, its focus from that of a sports club to a complete country club - a place where spouse, sons, and daughters of members may gather, the object being to cater for families as well as athletic element in various sports.  Tennis courts, stands and traps for shooting were added and bridge parties, dramatic readings by period’s leading playwrights, weekly receptions and dance joined golf  as activities enjoyed by club members.  Its sumptuous design and beautiful furnishings made it the social center of Greenwich for nearly three decades.  The Squash Building (Converse House) was added in 1928, followed by the addition of a Pool facility in 1939.

In 1960, the club suffered a very devastating fire which totally destroyed the Clubhouse including irreplaceable portraits, trophies and items of great historical value to the members of the Club and the sport of Golf.  Like a Phoenix rising out of the ashes, the Club rebuilt the Clubhouse adding bowling facilities, paddle tennis courts and an expanded ballroom.

In October of 2005, after a tear down of the old sqash building and six months of construction,  a brand new Squash Building re-opened its doors to the membership. This new facility houses two international singles courts, one doubles court and ladies and men's locker rooms. Its second floor boasts a state-of-the-art fitness facility with the latest in fitness equipment and personal training.

In June of 2007, the club opened the doors to a newly renovated Grand Ballroom. Walls were knocked down to extend ballroom areas, a new fireplace and bar were designed, carpeting, wallpaper and fixtures were replaced, new furniture was ordered and the overall ambiance of the Ballroom became one of old world luxury.

Over the years, the Club has enjoyed an exemplary reputation for its beautiful grounds, genteel atmosphere and the professionalism and friendliness of its staff. Governed by a Board of members and managed by a team of experienced and knowledgeable professionals, the Greenwich Country Club has been host to world leaders of business, finance and government as well as the most prominent names in Greenwich, Connecticut and the Nation.
